Safe and Lively Streets

Continuing the Downtown Revival, getting more out of Milton Ave and more:

What We Believe:

Streets should be safe, comfortable, and inviting for everyone—not just those in cars. Milton Avenue, one of Janesville’s busiest corridors, currently operates as a dangerous “stroad”—a hybrid of a street and a road that’s unsafe for pedestrians and inefficient for drivers.

With the new Woodman’s Center coming to the Janesville Mall, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Milton Avenue into something better. Right now, walking across the street is dangerous and unpleasant. It shouldn’t be reckless to walk to dinner, the store, or a Jets game.

Our Vision:

  • Redesign intersections and crossings for walkability and safety.
  • More protected bike lanes and bus shelters.
  • Reduce lane widths and manage speeds to improve comfort and safety.
  • Encourage a “park once” model where visitors can walk between destinations.
  • Replace redundant frontage roads on Milton Ave with greenways and pedestrian/bike corridors.

Why It Matters:

  • Safety: Wide, high-speed roads are deadly by design.
  • Economic development: Streets designed for people attract more local spending.
  • Public health: Walkable areas encourage physical activity and lower stress.
  • Tax efficiency: Compact, walkable areas generate more tax revenue per acre.
