Ending the era of car-first design
What We Believe:
Janesville has too much parking—not too little. Mandated parking minimums and free city-owned lots waste valuable land, encourage driving, and make our city less walkable and less fiscally sustainable.
Our Vision:
- Eliminate minimum parking requirements for new development.
- Let businesses decide how much parking they need.
- Charge fair, demand-based prices for city-owned parking.
- Allow shared parking arrangements between nearby uses.
- Encourage redevelopment of underused parking lots into housing or businesses.
Why It Matters:
- Better land use: Surface parking lots create dead zones in neighborhoods.
- City finances: Parking doesn’t pay taxes—buildings do.
- Climate impact: Reducing car dependency lowers emissions.
- Housing affordability: Parking requirements increase building costs.
